5 Common Mistakes Nurses Make on Their Resumes (and How to Fix Them)

If you’ve ever stared at your resume thinking, “How do I even fit years of nursing experience on one page?” — trust me, I’ve been there.

When I was updating my resume a few years ago, I thought listing every single duty from my job description would impress recruiters. Spoiler alert: it didn’t. It just looked… like a wall of text.

Over the years — and after helping many fellow nurses land better roles — I’ve noticed a few common mistakes we all make when writing our resumes. Let’s fix those together 👇

1. Listing Tasks Instead of Impact

We’re so used to documenting everything that we end up turning our resumes into care plans.

For example, we write:

“Provided patient care and administered medications.”

But hiring managers already know that’s part of nursing. What stands out is how well you did it.

Try this instead:

“Delivered compassionate care to 5+ patients per shift while maintaining 100% medication accuracy.”

See the difference? It shows results, not just duties.

2. Forgetting to Customize

We nurses love multitasking — but one-size-fits-all doesn’t work for resumes.

I used to send the same resume everywhere until I realized each unit values something different.

  • ICU might care about critical thinking.

  • Long-term care might value communication and consistency.

  • Community health roles look for patient education skills.

Take five minutes to tweak your summary and key points for each job. It makes a huge difference.

3. Overloading It With Medical Jargon

You don’t need to sound like a medical textbook.

Your resume isn’t for another nurse — it’s for a recruiter or HR professional who might not understand “neurovascular assessments” or “hemodynamic monitoring.”

Keep it simple and clear. Focus on outcomes, not abbreviations.

4. Skipping the Summary or Objective

The first few lines of your resume are your chance to shine.

Think of it as your mini introduction — like saying, “Here’s who I am, what I’m great at, and what I bring to your team.”

Example:

“Compassionate RN with 7+ years of acute care experience, dedicated to improving patient outcomes and supporting team collaboration.”

Short, warm, and straight to the point.

5. Forgetting to Show Growth

Even if you’ve worked at the same hospital for years, show your progress.

Did you mentor new nurses? Join a committee? Help with a new charting system? That’s leadership!
